A totally dead air conditioner is usually a broken link in a chain of switches, not a broken machine. Walking that chain in order finds the fault, and in Florida the float switch is the link most people never think to check.
Nothing. No fan, no click, no hum, no blinking light. This is a different problem from a system that runs but does not cool, and it gets diagnosed differently. A dead system means the call for cooling is not making it through the chain of switches and safeties between your thermostat and your compressor. Find the broken link and you find the problem.
How the System Actually Starts
You need this for the checklist to make sense. A transformer inside your air handler steps line voltage down to 24 volts, and that low-voltage circuit is the nervous system of your HVAC. When the thermostat decides the house is too warm, it sends 24 volts out along the Y wire toward the outdoor unit. On the way, that signal must pass through several safety switches wired in series. If any one is open, the signal dies right there.
If it completes the trip, it energizes the contactor coil at the condenser, which pulls in and closes heavy contacts feeding line voltage to the compressor and condenser fan. At the same time the thermostat calls the blower on. Cooling begins.
So a dead system means either the 24 volts never got made, or something along that chain opened it up. Here is the chain, in order.
Link 1: The Thermostat
- Blank display? If it is battery powered, put fresh batteries in. If it is hardwired and the screen is dead, it lost its 24-volt power, which points at the transformer, the low-voltage fuse, or the C-wire. That is a clue, not a dead end.
- Screen on but nothing happening? Confirm the mode is COOL and the setpoint is several degrees below room temperature. Check for a schedule or a hold that has quietly parked you at 80.
- C-wire. Wi-Fi thermostats need a common wire for continuous 24-volt power. Some installs skip it and let the stat scavenge power off the control wires, which is marginal and can produce a thermostat that resets or drops calls.
Link 2: The Float Switch (This Is the Big One in Florida)

Your evaporator coil condenses a startling amount of water out of the air. In a Pasco County summer, a residential system can pull several gallons a day out of your house. That water drips into a drain pan and exits through a PVC condensate line.
That drain line clogs. Constantly. It is a dark, cool, wet plastic tube, which is a nearly ideal home for algae and biological slime, and Florida gives it eight or nine months a year of continuous water to grow in. When the line plugs, the pan fills.
The float switch is the safety that keeps your ceiling from taking a bath. It is a small device on the side of the drain pan or spliced into the drain line, containing a float. When the water level rises, the float lifts and opens the 24-volt circuit. The call for cooling dies instantly and the entire system shuts down.
To a homeowner this looks exactly like total failure. Thermostat fine, breaker fine, nothing happens. But the equipment is perfectly healthy. It has simply been ordered to stop.
What to look for: Standing water in the drain pan, water stains under the air handler, or a wet spot on a ceiling below an attic unit. If the pan has water in it, your drain line is clogged, and clearing the drain is the actual repair. Maintaining that drain line is one of the highest-value preventive tasks in a Florida home.
Link 3: The Air Handler Service Switch
Somewhere near your air handler, in the garage, attic, or a utility closet, there is a switch on the wall in a standard-looking box. It looks exactly like a light switch because it is one. It is the service disconnect for the indoor unit, so a technician can kill power without walking to the panel.
People flip it. Someone hunting for the attic light, a painter masking the wall, a kid flipping switches to find one that does something. Then the AC is dead and nobody connects the two events. Check it before anything harder.
Link 4: The Breakers
There are at least two: a large double-pole breaker for the outdoor condenser and another for the air handler. A tripped breaker often sits in a mushy middle position rather than fully off, and you can miss it at a glance. Push it firmly all the way to OFF, then decisively to ON.
One reset only. If a breaker trips again, stop. It trips because current exceeded what the wire can safely carry, and something downstream is causing that: a shorted capacitor, a grounded compressor winding, a failing fan motor, damaged wiring, or an insect nest in the contactor. Repeated resets force that fault current through the circuit again and again, and that is how electrical fires start. A breaker that trips twice is a call, not a puzzle.
Link 5: The Outdoor Disconnect
On the exterior wall within sight of the condenser is a small gray box holding either a pull-out block or a switch. It can be left out after service, knocked loose, or pulled by a landscaper. If it is out, the outdoor unit has no line voltage at all, so the condenser sits dead while your indoor blower runs happily, which confuses people.
Link 6: The Low-Voltage Fuse and the Transformer
Now we are past the homeowner line, but you should know what a technician is looking for.
On the control board inside the air handler is a small fuse, typically 3 or 5 amps and often a blade fuse like the ones in a car. It protects the 24-volt circuit. If a low-voltage wire chafes against sheet metal and shorts, that fuse blows to save the transformer. Symptom: totally dead system, blank thermostat.
Replacing the fuse without finding the short just means replacing it again in a few minutes. And if the transformer itself has failed, there is no 24 volts at all, so nothing in the system can even be asked to run.
Link 7: A Tripped High-Pressure Switch
The condenser has pressure safety switches wired into that same 24-volt chain. If head pressure climbs to a dangerous level, the high-pressure switch opens and shuts the system down before the compressor is damaged.
What drives pressure that high? Usually a condenser coil that cannot reject heat, caked with grass clippings, dryer lint, and pollen film. Sometimes a dead condenser fan motor or an overcharged system. Some switches reset themselves once pressure falls, producing a maddening pattern where the system runs, quits, sits, then runs again. Others latch and need a manual reset.
A tripped high-pressure switch is not the malfunction. It is a warning light. Something is genuinely wrong upstream of it, and resetting it without fixing that is asking for a compressor failure.
Where the Homeowner Ladder Stops
Thermostat, float switch and drain, service switch, breaker, disconnect. Those five are safe for you to check, and any of them can be the whole story. Below that you are in a live cabinet with a charged capacitor in it, and the tool required is a multimeter, not a hunch.
