Refrigerant Leaks: Why Topping Off Your AC Is Not a Repair

Your air conditioner does not burn refrigerant the way an engine burns oil. It is a closed loop, so if the charge is low, it went somewhere, and it will go there again next summer.

Every summer, somewhere in Pasco County, a homeowner pays to have refrigerant added to an air conditioner. The next summer, they pay again. Each time the system cools better for a while, and each time the underlying problem goes untouched.

Refrigerant Is Not a Consumable

Gasoline gets burned. Motor oil gets consumed. Refrigerant does neither. It lives in a sealed loop of copper and steel, and its whole job is to change state over and over: boiling into vapor inside your evaporator coil, absorbing heat from the house, then getting compressed and condensed back into liquid outside, dumping that heat into your yard. Then it does it again. Forever, in theory.

Nothing in that cycle uses refrigerant up. A perfectly sealed system installed in 2008 should hold exactly the same charge today. So when a technician puts gauges on your unit and finds it low, there is one explanation: the refrigerant escaped. There is a hole somewhere, and it is still there.

The mental model: Refrigerant is not fuel. It is the working fluid, like the coolant in your car or the water in a boiler loop. A low charge is not consumption. It is a leak.

Why "Just Top It Off" Is Bad Practice

Adding refrigerant to a leaking system does three unhelpful things. It masks the symptom for a few weeks or months. It commits you to paying for the same service on a schedule. And it deliberately releases refrigerant into the atmosphere, which is precisely what the EPA's venting prohibition under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act exists to prevent. That same rule is why anyone who handles refrigerant is legally required to hold EPA Section 608 certification.

The honest version of the conversation is: you have a leak, here is roughly where it is, here is what it takes to fix, and here is what it means for the life of this system. A recharge with no leak search is not a repair. It is a refill on a bucket with a hole in it.

Where Leaks Actually Happen

Leaks are not random. They cluster in specific places, and Florida homes have a very particular pattern.

The Evaporator Coil (Formicary Corrosion)

This is the big one, and it is genuinely worse in humid, air-tight homes. Formicary corrosion is a microscopic attack on the copper tubing of an indoor coil. Volatile organic compounds off-gassing from cleaning products, new carpet, adhesives, paints, and pressed-wood furniture combine with the moisture that is always present on a cold, wet evaporator coil, and the result is an acid that eats tunnels through the copper from the outside in. Under a microscope the pathways look like ant galleries, which is where the name comes from.

The tunnels are far too small to see with your eye. The coil looks fine. It just will not hold pressure. This is the classic Florida leak, and it is the reason a coil can fail on a system that has been maintained perfectly.

Schrader Valves and Service Ports

The service ports on your lineset use a valve core almost identical to the one in a bicycle tire. The rubber seal hardens, and they weep. One of the easiest leaks to fix and one of the most commonly missed, because a tech who never sprays the ports never sees it.

Brazed Joints and Lineset Rub-Throughs

Every place two pieces of copper were joined with a torch is a potential leak, and years of compressor vibration do not help. Meanwhile, the lines running from your air handler to the condenser pass through walls, attics, and framing. Where copper rests against a metal strap or a truss, decades of expansion, contraction, and vibration slowly saw a groove into the tube until it goes through. Attic linesets are a frequent offender.

Condenser Coil Damage

The outdoor coil is a thin fin-and-tube wrap that anything can reach. String trimmers throw debris and sometimes hit the coil directly. Closer to the coast, salt accelerates corrosion. Around here, the trimmer is the more common culprit.

The Part That Costs You a Compressor

Here is why letting a leak ride is genuinely expensive, and it has nothing to do with the price of refrigerant.

Compressor oil does not sit in a sump waiting for a dipstick. It circulates with the refrigerant, carried around the loop as a mist and returned to the compressor with the suction vapor. Refrigerant is the delivery vehicle for the oil. Charge drops, mass flow drops, less oil makes it home, and the compressor starts running dry.

At the same time, that returning cold suction gas is what cools the compressor's motor windings. Low charge means less cool gas, so the motor runs hot while it is already running under-lubricated. That combination is how a repairable leak turns into a compressor replacement, which is one of the few failures that genuinely change the repair-versus-replace math.

Stop point: If your suction line is frosted or your system runs nonstop and barely cools, shut the cooling off at the thermostat and leave the fan on AUTO. Running a severely undercharged system is actively destroying the most expensive component in it.
