Air Filters in Florida: How Often to Change Them and What MERV Actually Means

The filter box says every 90 days. In a Florida home that runs its AC ten months a year, that number is fiction. And the higher-MERV filter you bought to fix your allergies may be strangling your blower.

The air filter is the cheapest, most accessible, most frequently ignored part of your entire HVAC system. It is also the part homeowners are most confidently wrong about, in two specific ways: how often to change it, and which one to buy. Both mistakes cost you, and one of them can genuinely damage equipment.

Why "Every 3 Months" Is Wrong Here

The instruction printed on the filter box is a national average. It assumes a system that runs hard for three or four months a year and then sits idle.

That is not your house. In Zephyrhills, your air conditioner runs from roughly March through November, and on plenty of days in December and February too. Your system may rack up more run time in one Florida summer than a house in Ohio does in a year.

Runtime is the real clock, not the calendar. A filter does not degrade with time. It loads up with particles as air passes through it, so the more air passes through, the faster it loads. A filter in an idle system looks brand new after six months. The same filter in an air handler running eighteen hours a day since May is a solid gray mat.

And then there are the accelerants: a shedding dog, construction anywhere nearby (which in Wesley Chapel and Land O' Lakes means most of the time), lawn work or a dirt driveway, open windows in the shoulder seasons, any remodeling inside the house (drywall dust will annihilate a filter in days), and a duct system with return leaks pulling attic dust straight in.

A Real Cadence, By Filter Type

1-inch fiberglass (the flat, blue, see-through kind)

Realistically a 30-day part, and honestly you should not be using it at all. More on this below.

1-inch pleated (the accordion-folded kind, MERV 8 to 11)

In a Florida home during cooling season, plan on every 30 to 60 days. With pets, or during construction, call it 30. In the mildest part of winter you might stretch it. The 90-day claim on the package is aspirational.

4- to 5-inch media cabinet (the big pull-out box at the air handler)

These hold vastly more dust because they have vastly more surface area folded inside them. Plan on every 6 to 12 months, and check it at the 6-month mark. If your home has one of these, it is a real advantage, and we will get to why.

The only rule that actually works: Look at it once a month. Pull it out, hold it up to a light. If you cannot clearly see light through it, it is done, regardless of what the calendar says. Set a phone reminder for the first of the month and take ten seconds.

What MERV Actually Means

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is the ASHRAE 52.2 rating scale, running from 1 to 16 for the filters used in residential and commercial systems. Higher numbers capture smaller particles. That is the whole idea.

So you should just buy MERV 13, right?

No. And this is the part that matters most.

The Trade-Off Almost Every Homeowner Gets Wrong

A filter that catches smaller particles does it by having a denser, tighter web of fibers. A denser web is harder to push air through. That resistance is called pressure drop, and it adds directly to the static pressure your blower has to fight.

Your air handler was designed around a certain amount of resistance. Exceed it, and the consequences cascade:

  1. Airflow drops. The blower simply cannot move as much air through the restriction.
  2. The coil gets too cold. With less air carrying heat across it, the evaporator coil's temperature falls.
  3. The coil can freeze. Below 32 degrees, the condensation on the coil stops draining and starts building ice. Ice blocks airflow further, which makes the coil colder, which builds more ice. Now you have a solid block of ice, no cooling at all, and water overflowing the drain pan when it finally melts.
  4. The blower works harder and draws more power, and on some equipment a variable-speed motor will keep ramping up to try to hit its airflow target, burning energy and shortening its own life.
  5. Capacity falls across the whole house. Less air moving means less heat removed, even though the system is running longer.

The specific mistake: Buying a 1-inch filter marketed with words like "HEPA-grade," "allergen elimination," or "maximum filtration" and dropping it into a slot designed for a MERV 8. That thin, ultra-restrictive filter can choke a system badly enough to freeze the coil. People buy them for their allergies and end up with an AC that does not cool and a service call.

So What Should You Actually Buy?

If you have a standard 1-inch filter slot: a quality pleated filter in the MERV 8 to 11 range. That is the honest answer for the vast majority of homes. It gives you real filtration without strangling the blower. Do not go chasing MERV 13 in a 1-inch slot unless a technician has actually measured your static pressure and confirmed your system can take it.

If you want MERV 13 filtration without the penalty: get a thick media cabinet installed, 4 or 5 inches deep. Here is the physics: pressure drop depends on how much air is being forced through each square inch of filter media. A deep pleated cabinet packs enormous surface area into that box. Spread the same airflow across far more media, and the velocity through any given spot drops, and so does the pressure drop. More surface area equals lower resistance at the same filtration level. That is how you get MERV 13 and a happy blower at the same time. It is one of the genuinely worthwhile upgrades in a Florida home.

What to avoid: the dollar fiberglass panel that protects the equipment and cleans nothing, and the hyper-restrictive 1-inch "premium" filter that cleans beautifully and suffocates your system.

Two Details People Get Wrong

The arrow

Every filter has an arrow printed on the frame. The arrow points in the direction of airflow, which means it points toward the air handler and away from the room. Air flows from the house, through the filter, into the blower. Install it backwards and the filter's own structure is fighting the airflow, the media can bow and collapse, and you lose efficiency and add resistance. Take the two seconds to look at the arrow.

What the filter is actually for

Homeowners think of the filter as an air purifier. It is not, primarily. The filter's main job is protecting the equipment. It keeps dust off your evaporator coil, out of your blower wheel, and off the drain pan. A coil caked in dust cannot transfer heat, which means less cooling, higher bills, and eventually a coil that has to be pulled and chemically cleaned. Cleaner air in your lungs is a genuine and welcome bonus, but every filter decision should start with a different question: does my system have the airflow to support this?
